Topic: How to deal with Language Barriers in a Diverse Work Force
Presenters: Victoria Darnbrough (Learning and Development Manager) from ACL Services and Jeff Madigan (Director of Programs) from L2 Accent Reduction Centre for this informative discussion and workshop
How to deal with language barriers in a diverse work force. Is accented speech dividing your staff? How do you determine between language fluency and heavy accents? How can your staff adjust their listening techniques to accommodate their coworkers? Sometimes, communication problems arise from language barriers such as unintelligible accented speech, a different tone in written documents, and/or the tone of one’s voice. At this RT we will discuss how we deal with these issues in a constructive manner to help minimize communication problems.
What participants will learn:
- How to improve your own listening skills to help your diverse staff
- How to deal with language issues at work in a constructive way
- How to approach the issue with employees without offending them
- How to involve management in addressing the issues
